The coloured hooks hark back to the earliest days of the service when lifeboats were powered by oar and sail, with blue oars on the starboard side and white on the port side so that people could tell which way around the double-ended lifeboat was rowing.
- The indices and hands are coated with Elliot Brown's own SuperLuminova film to ensure long-lasting visibility in low and no light conditions.
