The Resurrection of the “Rotary Switch”:

In 1982, Seiko released a digital watch that defied convention. Instead of relying on tiny side-buttons, it introduced a bold octagonal bezel that allowed users to “call up” functions with a simple turn.
Affectionately nicknamed the “Rotocall” by enthusiasts, it became a cult hero of the Space Shuttle era — not as marketing hype, but as a practical tool designed for astronauts who needed to operate their watches while wearing heavy flight gloves.

Design Archaeology: Rebuilt from Scratch:

Reviving the Rotocall for a new generation required a mission of true “design archaeology.” With original blueprints lost, Seiko’s designers at the Seiko Design Center reconstructed the watch using microscopes and 1/100th-of-a-millimetre measurements of vintage museum pieces.
The result is the SMGG21P1 — a faithful recreation that preserves the iconic 37mm silhouette and tactile rotary switch interface, while upgrading the internals for modern performance and reliability.

The Rotocall’s pedigree is unmatched. It is famously known as the “Most Vertical Watch,” a title earned on the wrist of astronaut and oceanographer Kathy Sullivan.
Worn during two Space Shuttle missions (STS-41G and STS-31) and later taken to the deepest point on Earth — the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench — the Rotocall proved its resilience from the vacuum of orbit to the crushing depths of the ocean floor.
