Developing the Holton Professional by Elliot Brown

Elliot Brown’s first watch designed with any external input. The Holton was designed for a specialist branch of the British Military due to their operators preferring Elliot Brown watches they had purchased privately to the ones they were issued with. At first touch, the Holton is a sturdy watch with bold features and military colours. On the inside, the watch breathes features that can guide the British Military ready into battle!

The reason the operators were having issues was due to losses caused by broken spring bars, awkward bezels that don’t work with gloved fingers, water-entry, torn straps and not being durable enough for harsh conditions. To eliminate the problem, a senior member approached Elliot Brown to ask if they would consider designing a new watch and Elliot Brown being the accommodating brand they are, happily obliged! The result is a brand-new watch, whose design manages to echo the minimalism of vintage military watches with slab sides and starky bold details yet carries clear lineage to Elliot Brown’s house style.

The Holton has a high-grip bezel designed so that it can be turned by gripping the edge, or by pressing downwards on the top with a gloved hand – which instantly fixes one of their main issues. The bezel has a hash mark every minute that has been debossed then filled with SuperLuminova C3. C3 is also used in the dial and hands to provide superb performance in poor lighting which although wasn’t listed as an issue, is a great added extra for their primary users.

The minute hand is a slender parallel button design whilst the hour hand is a short stubby sword design. The different designs mean the wearer would be less likely to confuse the two at a glance and in Military conditions, efficiency is key. To minimise the possibility of the triple sealed crown getting caught or being damaged, it is located at 4 o’clock and recessed deeply into the case. The triple seal also allows the watch to remain waterproof to 200m even when unscrewed.

Glassed in 2mm thick sapphire crystal, with a special reflective coating on the underside, the crystal sits neatly just below the external bezel to prevent damage – minimising the lack of durability demonstrated in their previous watches. Solid steel bars are threaded directly into the case that provides the same strength as the old-style fixed bars but can be unscrewed with their bespoke pentalobe driver that locates positively into the ends of bars, enabling simple strap change in the field.

Multi-level detailing on the case back ensures minimal contact between watch and skin, not only that, but the case back is bolted down, compressing the seals and movement shock absorption system perfectly.

With this, Elliot Brown have created the first military issue watch from a British company in 13 years and may I say, they have gone above and beyond to achieve this creation, really showing their attentive side and taking care of each issue the operators raised. Elliot Brown take a great deal of pride in what they do, which makes us here at WatchO even prouder to work with them.
