Discover Frederique Constant

Founded in 1988 in Geneva by Aletta and Peter Stas, Frederique Constant was created with the ambition to challenge the traditional Swiss watch industry. While the brand name honours the founders’ ancestors, Frederique Schreiner and Constant Stas, the company’s true identity has always been rooted in its refusal to act merely as an assembler of standard watch components. From the beginning, Frederique Constant aimed to combine classical Swiss watchmaking with genuine technical independence and innovation.

In 1994, the brand introduced the Heart Beat, a distinctive design that revealed the balance wheel through an opening on the dial. This feature quickly became one of Frederique Constant’s most recognisable signatures. Beyond its visual appeal, the Heart Beat symbolised the beauty and transparency of mechanical watchmaking at a time when quartz watches still dominated the industry.

Fun fact: While many brands now produce open-balance designs, Frederique Constant pioneered the Heart Beat concept in 1994. The idea was to show that a mechanical “heart” was beating inside the watch. Ironically, the design was never patented, which explains why similar designs appear widely today. Nevertheless, Frederique Constant remains the original creator of this aesthetic.

A major step forward came in 2004, when the brand moved beyond the industry norm of relying on outsourced movements such as ETA or Sellita. Frederique Constant introduced its first in-house Manufacture movement, marking a significant milestone in its development as a true Swiss manufacture with greater control over movement design and engineering.

The company expanded its footprint in 2002 through the acquisition of Alpina Watches, a historic Swiss watchmaker known for sports and professional tool watches. This acquisition allowed Frederique Constant to broaden its expertise while maintaining its own focus on refined, classical timepieces.

Another pivotal moment came in 2016, when Frederique Constant joined the global watchmaking group Citizen Watch Co.. This partnership provided the brand with a powerful strategic advantage through collaboration with the Swiss movement specialist La Joux-Perret.

Unlike many Swiss competitors that depend heavily on third-party suppliers for their movements, this relationship enables Frederique Constant to advance technical development and precision engineering within its own ecosystem. Through this synergy, the brand can develop sophisticated complications such as Perpetual Calendar, Tourbillon, and Worldtimer, strengthening its level of vertical integration.

The collaboration has also led to significant innovations, including the Monolithic Manufacture, which features a revolutionary silicon oscillator vibrating at 40 Hz (288,000 beats per hour). This level of research and development is typically associated with haute horlogerie brands commanding far higher price points.

While many brands rely on the “Swiss Made” label primarily as a marketing distinction, Frederique Constant emphasises genuine watchmaking substance. Through its Geneva-based manufacture and its connection to La Joux-Perret, the brand maintains greater control over movement architecture, design, and final assembly.

Today, Frederique Constant stands as a rare example of a watchmaker that combines the prestige of a traditional Swiss manufacture with the innovation of a modern technical brand. By focusing on how its watches are engineered rather than simply where they are produced, the company continues to demonstrate that true Swiss excellence lies in craftsmanship, innovation, and independence.
