The Black Alpinist. The Collector's Choice:
  • Since 1959, Seiko has built watches for the men of the mountains, the yama-otoko. The Alpinist line has run unbroken through six generations, each refining what came before. But within that lineage, one variant has always carried its own distinct identity. The black dial Alpinist has never followed the crowd. It has never needed to.
  • The SPB117J1 is the sixth generation of a black dial tradition that traces directly back to the original 1995 Red Alpinist SCVF005, one of the most coveted vintage Seiko references in existence, now selling for hundreds more than its original price among serious collectors. The shark tooth indices. The bracelet. The restraint. All of it began there.
  • This is the Alpinist for those who know the line well enough to look beyond the obvious choice.
Designed with Heritage at Heart:
  • Black dial with distinctive triangular "shark tooth" indices, a design detail unique to the black Alpinist, present in every generation since 1995, and the mark that sets this watch apart from every other variant in the lineup.
  • Cathedral hands with LumiBrite treatment for exceptional legibility in low light, true to the original 1995 Shigeo Sakai design that introduced this feature to the Alpinist line for the first time.
  • Internal rotating compass bezel operated by a dedicated crown at 4 o'clock, one of the most iconic and functional design details in all of Seiko's catalogue, introduced in 1995 and unchanged ever since.
  • 39.5mm stainless steel case with 46.4mm lug-to-lug measurement, a proportion that wears closer to a dress watch than a tool watch, despite being built for the mountains.
  • Comes on a stainless steel bracelet, connecting it directly to the original 1995 SCVF005 black Red Alpinist, which also came on steel.
  • Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface for superior scratch resistance and clarity in any light condition.
  • See-through case back revealing the 6R35 movement beneath, the first time in Alpinist history that the movement has been made visible.
  • Date display at 3 o'clock with cyclops magnifier for easy reading in all conditions.
Technical Specifications:
  • Inside beats Seiko's in-house 6R35 automatic movement with manual winding capability, 24 jewels, and an impressive 70-hour power reserve, take it off Friday night, pick it up Monday morning, it's still running.
  • 200m water resistance with screw-down crown for field security and peace of mind in any environment.
  • Stop-seconds hand function for precise, reliable time-setting.
  • Stainless steel bracelet with tri-fold push-button release clasp and two micro-adjustment positions for a secure, comfortable fit on any wrist.
  • 3 years manufacturer warranty.
Why Collectors Love It:
  • The green Alpinist gets the attention. The black Alpinist has always had the story. From the SCVF005 to the SARB015 to the SPB117J1, the black dial has carried its own distinct identity through every generation, the most understated, most refined, and most quietly coveted variant in the entire Alpinist line.
  • Ask anyone who has owned multiple generations of the Alpinist which dial they reach for most often, and the answer is rarely straightforward. Many come back to the black. Because it wears differently. It's versatile, the kind of watch that reveals its character gradually rather than immediately.
  • Designer Yasuhiro Kuzuya, who brought the Alpinist into the modern era, put it best when asked why he returned to a mechanical movement: "It takes a bit of effort, but it’s lots of fun… like confronting nature." The SPB117J1 embodies that philosophy completely.
